about

"So who was Sarah Whitehead, and how and why is
she known as the Black Nun?"

Though accounts vary, it is an intriguing introduction to our association with Much Wenlock-based composer Vincent Wildly.

When we were first approached through mutual friends, the offer seemed too good to be true; an avant garde composition based on the 'Old Lady of Threadneedle Street" recorded in the rural
Shropshire village of Ditton Priors at the base of Brown Clee? Much less that it utilised both tape echo and a 'mixed octet, unorthodox in arrangement'. We simply had to put it out.

Today are pleased to re-release Wildy’s ‘The Black Nun’ via Digital Download, 204 years on from the date of her brother Phillip’s alleged arrest at The Bank of England on the 2nd November 1811.

Each digital copy joins the original recording of 'The Black Nun' with Victoria Clinton's original hand-illustrated artwork, a series of five high resolution photographs by Eric Loveland Heath and Jonathan Day's reading of Wildly's musings on the writing process.

What better way to stir the spirits and uncover old secrets than by tunnelling through them?

The tube has more than her share of ghosts.
